Centralized procurement is a model where one procurement team, usually at head office, handles purchasing for the whole organisation. Departments, plants and regional offices send their requirements to the central team, which selects suppliers, negotiates contracts and places orders on their behalf.

## Benefits

- **Buying power.** Combining demand across sites gives you volume to negotiate better prices and terms.
- **Consistency.** One set of policies, contract templates, approval rules and supplier standards.
- **Visibility.** All spend flows through one place, so reporting, compliance checks and savings tracking are straightforward.
- **Expertise.** Category specialists can be hired centrally rather than spread thinly across sites.
- **Less maverick spend.** Fewer people with the authority to buy outside contracts.

## Drawbacks

- Slower response for urgent or local needs.
- Distance from the people who actually use what is bought, so specifications can miss the mark.
- Local supplier relationships and market knowledge are lost.
- A central team can become a bottleneck if it is not resourced for the volume.

## Centralized, decentralized or hybrid

Most large organisations settle on a centre-led hybrid. The central team owns strategy, major categories, contracts and the technology platform, while local teams buy within those contracts and handle low-value or site-specific purchases.
