A good procurement manager delivers supply the business can rely on, at a cost it can defend, with risk under control, and does it in a way that colleagues and suppliers want to work with. Price is the visible part. The rest is what makes the role hard.

## The skills that matter

- **Commercial judgement.** Knowing total cost of ownership, when to compete a category and when to partner, and how a supplier makes money.
- **Negotiation.** Preparation, clear objectives and the discipline to walk away. Collaborative where the relationship is strategic, competitive where the market is deep.
- **Data fluency.** Reading spend data, building a should-cost, setting and tracking KPIs such as savings, on-time delivery, quality and compliance.
- **Supplier relationship management.** Segmenting suppliers, running business reviews, handling disputes early.
- **Stakeholder management.** Turning a vague request from engineering or marketing into a specification, and bringing finance and legal along.
- **Risk and compliance awareness.** Supply continuity, third-party risk, sanctions, ESG requirements, audit readiness.
- **Process and technology.** Running clean sourcing events, contracts and purchase orders in a system, and using AI tools where they save real time.
- **Communication and ethics.** Clear writing, fair dealing with suppliers and zero tolerance for conflicts of interest.

## How to grow into it

Own a category end to end, measure your results, learn the finance behind the numbers, and spend time with suppliers' operations. Certifications help, but a track record of savings delivered without supply problems counts for more.
