How can enterprise buyers digitize procurement?

Written by Shivangi Singh, Senior Content Writer · October 17, 2026

A sequence that works

  1. Map the current process and measure it: cycle time from request to PO, PO coverage, invoice exceptions, savings realised. These become your before-and-after numbers.
  2. Clean the master data. Supplier records, item masters and category taxonomy. Digital workflows amplify bad data.
  3. Start where the pain is highest. Common first steps are intake and approvals, sourcing events and auctions, or supplier onboarding. Prove value in one area before expanding.
  4. Connect to the ERP. Purchase orders, receipts and invoices must flow without re-keying, or you have added a system rather than removed work.
  5. Bring suppliers along. A supplier portal for bids, documents and invoices only works if suppliers use it. Make it simpler than email.
  6. Add AI where it removes manual effort. Spend classification, bid comparison, contract clause extraction, document chasing. Keep humans on judgement calls, and keep an audit trail of what the AI did.
  7. Govern the change. Policy, training, and leadership insisting the new channel is the only channel.

What to look for in a platform

One connected source-to-pay flow rather than point tools, strong ERP integration, a supplier experience that suppliers accept, and AI that is governed and explainable. Procol's procurement software is built on that model, with Clara orchestrating agents and people across the process.
