How do you manage direct procurement?

Written by Shivangi Singh, Senior Content Writer · October 17, 2026

What good direct procurement looks like

  • Demand-led planning. Purchase plans come from the production forecast and bill of materials, not from reorder points alone.
  • Fewer, deeper supplier relationships. Direct categories reward long-term contracts, joint quality programmes and shared forecasts over one-off bidding.
  • Specification control. Every item has an agreed specification, approved sources and a change process. Substitutions are decided by engineering and procurement together.
  • Risk cover. Dual sourcing or safety stock for critical parts, and visibility into tier-two suppliers for the materials your suppliers depend on.
  • Price management. Index-linked pricing for commodities, periodic should-cost reviews and competitive events such as reverse auctions when the market allows.

Measure it

Track on-time-in-full delivery, quality rejections, price variance against plan and inventory days. These four numbers tell you whether direct procurement is protecting both supply and margin.

If your team still runs this on spreadsheets and email, a procurement platform that connects requirements, sourcing events, contracts and purchase orders removes most of the manual follow-up.
