What is a direct material?

Direct versus indirect
- Direct materials go into the product. Demand is driven by the production plan and the bill of materials.
- Indirect materials support operations but do not end up in the product: lubricants, safety gear, packaging in some accounting treatments, spare parts, office supplies.
Packaging and consumables sit on the line and are classified differently by different companies. Agree the rule with finance once and apply it consistently.
Why the distinction matters
Direct materials are managed by direct procurement, which works closely with planning, engineering and quality. Typical features are approved-source lists, specifications under change control, long-term agreements with a few strategic suppliers, safety stock for critical items and index-linked pricing for commodities. A stockout stops production, so supply assurance ranks alongside price.
Indirect spend is usually managed by category with more supplier competition and lighter controls.
In practice
If you are setting up spend analysis or a procurement system, tag each material as direct or indirect at the item master level. Reporting, sourcing strategy and supplier management all flow from that one flag.
